Final Fantasy

Every world begins with crystals, and every crystal is already cracking. Final Fantasy is not one story but a constellation of them — each numbered world its own kingdom, its own private apocalypse, bound to the others only by a shared tongue of light: four elemental crystals, an airship on the far horizon, a summoned god who answers to Bahamut or Shiva, a wry engineer forever named Cid, chocobos underfoot and a moogle somewhere murmuring kupo. Step into any single one and you step into a self-contained mythology of young outcasts standing between a fragile world and the thing that would unmake it. The books gathered here are companions to those worlds — novellas and novelizations written largely by the games' own architects. Kazushige Nojima, scenario writer of Final Fantasy VII, follows his cast past the ending in On the Way to a Smile; Emi Nagashima, better known as the novelist Jun Eishima, carries the crystal-doomed sky-cities of Final Fantasy XIII and the road-trip elegy of Final Fantasy XV into prose. Around them sit the storybook origins of the very first Final Fantasy, the short-fiction cycle Chronicles of Light drawn from the ever-running Final Fantasy XIV, and Dean Wesley Smith and John Vornholt's telling of the film Spirits Within. Threads, not a single braid. What binds them is a register: operatic and melancholy, sincere about hope in a way that outlives the end of the world, ache and wonder held in one hand. There is no master reading order, because there is no master world — each book leans on the game it grew from.
