God Complex
George Saoulidis · 11 series · 5 novels · 4 novellas · 39 short stories · 4 collections · 2014–2020
The gods never died. They migrated — off Olympus, into the network, down into the chrome and wetware of a near-future that still owes them tribute. That is the working premise of George Saoulidis's God Complex, the shared banner over a Greek author's long habit of dragging the old myths through modern circuitry until they come out as science fiction: uncanny, transhuman, and faintly, deliberately wrong. The Furies file paperwork in the Maniai Case Files; a manufactured pop idol wakes in a body not quite her own in Cyberpink; nanodaemons swarm, muses are available for hire, fairy tales run cyberpunk, and a certain road still demands its due. This is less one continuous saga than a loose constellation of short series and novellas — myth reforged as body-strange horror and spooky sci-fi on one side, wry romantic comedy (the Pie stories, Loveless Ada) on the other, all flying the Myth Gods Tech flag. Nothing here waits on a hundred prior volumes. Each thread stands largely on its own, so a newcomer simply picks a myth and follows it down. Cyberpink is the cleanest doorway into the cyberpunk strain; the branded Myth Gods Tech shorts sample the whole conceit at a glance. Expect small, sharp, unashamedly icky retellings — ancient tragedy rebooted on new machines, and never quite reassuring you it has finished running.
