Universe
Naruto
In a world where nations hide their armies among the trees, a child is a weapon before he is a person. Chakra — the body's own spun energy — becomes fire, water, illusion, a shadow that fights in your place, and the hidden villages of shinobi trade in it alongside secrets, alliances, and the long grudges of clans. Into one such village a boy is born with a monster sealed in his belly and no one to want him. His answer is to become so loud, so stubborn, so impossible to abandon that the whole world is made to learn his name. That is Masashi Kishimoto's ninja world, and what this shelf holds is its prose canon — the novels that live alongside and after the drawn story. The Hiden ("secret") books each hand a single figure one mission at the tale's close: Kakashi in an icy sky, Shikamaru in silent darkness, Sakura on a spring breeze. The Shinden ("true legend") volumes go deeper into the tangled pasts of two brothers, Itachi and Sasuke. The Retsuden ("fierce legend") line leaps forward to the tired, married, still world-saving adults those children become. Kishimoto oversees; novelists Takashi Yano, Akira Higashiyama, Jun Esaka and others do the writing. The pull here is never the fight but its cost — comrades bound tighter by loss, a peace that must be re-earned every generation, the ache of growing up and passing on the torch. These are companions, not on-ramps: they reward a reader who already knows the shinobi and wants their inner lives. Begin with the character you would follow anywhere; the Hiden novels sit right at the story's ending, then the Shinden legends, then Retsuden for the grown world after.

The twelve Naruto novels take over where the manga stops: four short cycles that fill the quiet years after the war and then follow the cast into the next generation. Each cycle was written after the one before it, so publication order is also the order of the story. Itachi's two-part prequel is the one detour.
