Ring the Joseph Bell and lay the long tables, for a tale is starting. In the red sandstone Abbey of Redwall, deep in the green tangle of Mossflower Wood, mice and moles and hedgehogs keep the peace with October ale and honeyed scones and good plain neighbourliness — until some scarred searat, marauding fox, or wildcat warlord comes seeking plunder, and a quiet Abbey dweller must take up the great sword of Martin the Warrior and learn what courage truly costs. Brian Jacques raised this world across twenty-two novels, from Redwall (1986) to the posthumous The Rogue Crew (2011), each a self-contained siege, quest, or riddle-hunt rather than a link in one long chain. The seasons name the years; the badger Lords of the mountain-fortress Salamandastron and their bombastic Long Patrol hares hold the western shore; old ballads and buried clues thread one age quietly to the next. Companion works widen the map without asking you to follow a chart — the illustrated species guides gathered as The Tribes of Redwall, the picture books, and the narrated tellings. What sets these tales apart is their generous plainness: villains are villains, valour is valour, and every hard-won victory is paid for in a way younger readers feel keenly. Between the fighting come feasts described dish by groaning dish, the burring speech of moles and the "wot-wot" bluster of hares for comedy, and a rhyming riddle or two to puzzle out alongside the hero. Read them in the order they were written, and begin with Redwall itself; each book stands on its own, so wherever you first knock, the Abbey gates swing open the same warm way.
