Spook's Universe

The seventh son of a seventh son gets no say in the matter. Thomas Ward is apprenticed to the County Spook, a big grim old man who binds boggarts, buries witches alive beneath stone and rowan, and warns his boy early that the job kills apprentices at a rate he would rather not say aloud. The County is a cold, damp, recognisably northern English place of wet farms and dark hills, and the things living in it — Mother Malkin, the Bane, the Fiend himself — were here long before the church was. Joseph Delaney wrote the Wardstone Chronicles, published in the United States as The Last Apprentice, and then kept going: a sequel sequence takes Tom's story further, Brother Wulf hands the County over to a novice monk, and a run of shorter tales gives the women their own accounts — Alice, Grimalkin the witch assassin, the ones Tom is never quite sure he should trust. The mood is genuine horror written for young readers and not softened for them: apprenticeships with a body count, compromises that stay compromised, and a boy learning that his mother is not what the neighbours think. Start with The Spook's Apprentice and read the Chronicles in order — the sequence is one long escalation, and it earns its ending. Brother Wulf and the short fiction are for afterwards, once you know what the dark costs here.
