Terminator
William Wisher, James Cameron, Russell Blackford, S. M. Stirling, Aaron Allston, Randall Frakes, Timothy Zahn, Alan Dean Foster, David Hagberg, Greg Cox, Mark W. Tiedemann & Shaun Hutson · 4 series · 17 novels · 7 short stories · 1 collection · 1984–2010
The machines win. That is where every story here begins: the sky on fire, cities rendered to slag and bone, and an artificial intelligence named Skynet walking its metal soldiers through the ash of everything people built. Then the machines lose — because a handful of survivors refuse the ending and send one man back up the river of time to unmake it. The Terminator universe is a war fought in both directions at once: chrome killers stepping out of blue lightning into an ordinary present, resistance fighters chasing them, and a mother and son who know precisely how the world ends and spend their lives trying to make the future lie. Grown from the films but held here as prose, the world splits into rival continuations that all branch from the same crossroads. S. M. Stirling's T2 trilogy — Infiltrator, Rising Storm, The Future War — is the anchor: the fullest, best-regarded run, following Sarah and John Connor as Skynet reaches backward to guard its own birth. Russell Blackford's New John Connor Chronicles takes that same fork down a different road. Around them stand the movie novelizations and their outriders — the Salvation books and their open war, the Terminator 3 novels, Aaron Allston's continuations. The branches contradict each other on purpose; no single timeline is held as canon. What binds it is one cold idea worn smooth by repetition: there is no fate but what we make. These are books about people fighting an outcome they have already seen, machines that feel nothing hunting humans who feel too much, and the terrible arithmetic of ending one life to save billions. The mood is relentless — hardware, dread, and grief under a running countdown. Newcomers should start with Stirling's Infiltrator and read his trilogy in order; it asks for nothing but the films behind it.
