Travis Uriah Long is a young, awkward recruit in the fledgling Royal Manticoran Navy who has real trouble fitting in with his crewmates, but a sharp eye for detail no one else seems to share. When that same attentiveness starts turning up signs of a mercenary threat quietly gathering strength near the young Star Kingdom, Travis has to convince skeptical superiors that a nobody midshipman might be seeing something real. This novella lays the groundwork later expanded into the full Manticore Ascendant novel of the same name.
