Five years before the War of the Lance, young Sturm Brightblade sets out to find his missing father while his companion and sometime lover Kitiara Uth Matar rides along selling her sword to the highest bidder. A gnomish misadventure strands them on Lunitari, the red moon of neutral magic, among warring tree-people and crystalline ants, and the ordeal forces the two to finally admit how differently they see honor, duty, and each other.
