A multi-national mission to Alpha Centauri is undertaken shortly after the invention of the warp drive. They discover two Earth-like planets, with lifeforms too similar to Earth's to be coincidental. Political intrigue, personal conflicts and natural disaster threaten the mission, and they may have discovered a threat to Earth itself.
