Apprentice magician Skeeve and his demon partner Aahz have set themselves up as court wizards, a con that works fine until their employers actually expect them to defend the kingdom from an invading army with real magic they mostly don't have. Forced to improvise, bluff and scheme their way out of a fight they have no business winning, the pair leans on wit and misdirection rather than firepower, in keeping with the series' running joke that confidence beats competence more often than it should. The second of Robert Asprin's comic Myth Adventures novels.
