Having just defeated the hostile computer guarding an abandoned Kalandan outpost, Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise turn to the ancient device responsible for hurling their ship nearly a thousand light-years off course. Reactivating it reopens one of the galaxy's Gateways, and word travels fast: alien scavengers converge on the outpost, among them a group insisting they are the long-vanished Kalandans returned to reclaim what's theirs. The opening novel of the Gateways crossover sends Kirk hunting for a technology no one currently alive fully understands.
