Famine is pushing the Klingon Empire toward a war of conquest, and when an earthquake wrecks a remote Federation research station, agricultural scientist Jean Czerny survives with no memory of who she is — stranded on the Klingon side of the border and taken prisoner by Kang. Kirk has to out-maneuver a starving empire's most capable commander in a contest of nerve and strategy before Czerny becomes the excuse for the war everyone has been avoiding.
