Decades before he commands the Enterprise, Captain Jean-Luc Picard accompanies his prickly chief engineer Simenon home to Gnala for a sacred ritual, only to find saboteurs bent on making sure it fails. Left in charge of the Stargazer, second officer Victoria Wu answers a distress call and finds a crippled ship caught in a strange interstellar phenomenon that threatens to consume her own vessel next.
