When King Roger III of Manticore dies in what looks like an accident, his daughter Elizabeth ascends the throne far sooner than anyone planned, herself included. As she works out whether her father's death was truly innocent, she has to fend off councilors, courtiers, and political operators all trying to shape a young, untested queen into something they can manage. This novella catches Elizabeth Winton at the start of the political education that makes her the monarch later Honorverse novels know.
