Riverwind the Plainsman

To win the hand of Goldmoon, chieftain's daughter of the Que-Shu, the outcast plainsman Riverwind is sent on an impossible quest by tribal elders who despise his family's heretical faith in the old gods: bring back proof that they exist. Falling through a magical shaft with an eccentric soothsayer and a resourceful elf-girl, Riverwind finds slavery, sorcery, and rebellion in the buried city of Xak Tsaroth, and the Blue Crystal Staff of Mishakal that will change Krynn's fate.
