Steel Egg

Decades before the Nostromo ever answers a distress call, the crew of the survey ship Hornblower investigates a derelict alien vessel drifting near one of Saturn's moons, hoping to salvage it for scrap metal. What they find instead is a dead civilization and the predators that destroyed it, an early, unwitting step toward the policy that will one day doom Ripley's crew.
