Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who likes his pipe, his pantry, and staying exactly where he is—until the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield show up at his door with a plan to reclaim a stolen mountain kingdom from the dragon Smaug. Tolkien's first novel of Middle-earth sends the reluctant Bilbo out into a world of trolls, goblins, and a small gold ring that will turn out to matter far more than anyone realizes.
