Tolkien's legendarium

Before the seas were bent and the mountains raised, there was Music — and from that Music came Arda, and in the west of Middle-earth the long defeat and stubborn hope of those who dwell there. This is a world remembered rather than merely invented: a mythology given tongues, calendars, and grief, where an age is measured in the fading of the Elves and the slow rising of Men, and even a small creature carrying a small burden may turn the wheel of the world. The tale is told in strata. Nearest to hand stand The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, a journey there and back again that opens onto the war for an Age. Beneath them lies The Silmarillion, the high myth of the Elder Days — the making of the Jewels, the wars of Beleriand — and from that deep matter come the Great Tales published on their own: The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, and The Fall of Gondolin. Below all this runs the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, where Christopher Tolkien lays open his father's drafts and unfinished songs like a scholar reading rings in fallen timber; Unfinished Tales and The Nature of Middle-earth gather the remainder. Two hands shaped what we hold: the maker, and the son who spent a lifetime as its keeper and editor. What marks this world is its weight of years — languages that feel excavated, sorrows that echo across ages, a beauty always shadowed by loss and never wholly extinguished. A newcomer does well to walk in as a hobbit would: begin with The Hobbit, go on through The Lord of the Rings, then climb back into the deep time of The Silmarillion and the Great Tales.
