Nearly a decade after Kirk's disappearance, Captain Hikaru Sulu takes the Excelsior into talks meant to ease decades of hostility with the xenophobic Tholian Assembly, and instead stumbles into first contact with the Neyel, a scattered, human-descended people whose existence threatens to reopen one of Earth's oldest wounds.
