A ten-person crew travels to a planet far away from Earth and untouched by Hainish life. The first evaluation shows trees and grass, but no animals. One person has a highly developed empathy. As the rest don't like him, he mirrors this back to them. He can't feel animal life on this planet, but somehow there's still a lot of fear.
