Decades after the events of Anderson's first Isaac's Universe story, Naxian settlers are putting down roots on the world of New Halla, adjusting to an ecology that doesn't care about their plans. When the colony runs into trouble it can't handle alone, a rescue effort turns into a study of what it actually takes for a species to make a hostile new world work—cooperation, adaptation, and no small amount of trial and error.
