Black Ocean
J. S. Morin & M. A. Larkin · 5 series · 74 novels · 1 novella · 16 short stories · 2014–2025
Out past the shipping lanes and the corporate arcologies, faster-than-light travel runs on one stubborn fact: the stars won't fold for engines alone. You need a wizard aboard. Welcome to the Black Ocean, the twenty-sixth century as run by J. S. Morin, where hyperdrives hum on arcane muttering, aliens crew the same galley as humans, and a small ship with a big secret can always find work if it isn't too fussy about the law. Meet the Mobius and her crew of outlaws, mystics, and hard-luck cases: this is Firefly with grimoires, a rogue's galaxy where the magic is real and the paydays never quite clear the debts. The universe fans out through five interlocking series. It opens with Galaxy Outlaws, the episodic backbone that runs the Mobius through heists, feuds, and the megacorps and syndicates who own everything worth stealing. From there it branches: Mercy for Hire trails a relentless bounty hunter; Astral Prime turns on a pivotal space station; Mirth & Mayhem picks up a fugitive wizard and her captain; and Passage of Time hands the wheel to the next generation. Across roughly a hundred volumes, mostly quick-burning installments (some co-written with M. A. Larkin), it stays a single author's sandbox rather than a shared-world scramble. Expect banter over gravitas, capers over grand strategy, and a comic streak closer to Guardians of the Galaxy or Cowboy Bebop than to anything solemn. Newcomers should start with Galaxy Outlaws, which collects the earliest missions and is the author's own front door; read the sub-series in that publication sequence and the wider galaxy assembles itself around you.
