Diablo

Richard A. Knaak, Micky Neilson, Matt Burns, Nate Kenyon, uncredited, Alma Katsu, Cameron Dayton, Erik Sabol, James Waugh, Jonathan Maberry, Matthew J. Kirby, Mel Odom, Michael Chu & Robert B. Marks · 4 series · 10 novels · 2 novellas · 9 short stories · 3 anthologies · 2001–2026

Between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells lies Sanctuary — a world that was never meant to exist, raised in secret by an angel and a demon who wearied of the Eternal Conflict and dared to carve out a refuge from it. Their mortal children carry the blood of both host and horde, and in every age some ancient evil stirs to claim them. This is Diablo in prose: the printed shadow of Blizzard's dark-fantasy games, following the ordinary and the damned through a land where salvation and corruption wear the same ruined face. The line gathers around Sanctuary's long, bloodied history rather than a single hero. Richard A. Knaak anchors it — his Sin War trilogy (Birthright, Scales of the Serpent, The Veiled Prophet) reaches back to the world's founding and the first war between the Cathedral of Light and the demon-fed Triune, while Legacy of Blood, The Kingdom of Shadow, and Moon of the Spider stalk the wilds around the games. Mel Odom's The Black Road and Nate Kenyon's The Order thread into the campaigns of Diablo II and III; Matt Burns and others assemble the in-world compendia narrated by the old scholar Deckard Cain — chronicles of the Prime Evils, the angels, and the nephalem. Newer volumes carry the dread into the age of Diablo IV and the returning Mother, Lilith. The register never lifts: gothic horror clad in armor, where triumph is always provisional and the Lords of Terror, Hatred, and Destruction are wounded, never truly gone. Begin at the root with the Sin War trilogy, read in order; or, if you want the cosmology laid bare before the slaughter, open the Book of Cain first. Either way, arrive expecting doom — Sanctuary rewards no one for long.
