A marine on Phobos punches an officer, draws the quietest posting in the solar system, and is standing outside the ammunition shed when the base's teleport experiment opens onto somewhere that should not have an address. The things that come through are not aliens in the usual sense. They are horned, they are on fire, and one of them used to be the man in the next bunk. The novels take that premise seriously enough to be surprisingly good company. Dafydd ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver wrote four — Knee-Deep in the Dead, Hell on Earth, Infernal Sky and Endgame — narrated by Corporal Flynn Taggart in a dry, profane, wisecracking voice that keeps the horror from tipping over into farce. Matthew Costello's Worlds on Fire and Maelstrom go back to the Union Aerospace Corporation on Mars and to the ordinary corporate decisions that opened the door in the first place. Expect corridor horror, ammunition anxiety, and a running argument about whether hell is a place or a very badly explained physics problem. They are short, fast and pulpy on purpose. Start with Knee-Deep in the Dead; the four Taggart books run continuously, and Costello's pair stand on their own as the story of how the accident got arranged.
