The Grand Tour
Ben Bova & Les Johnson · 5 series · 26 novels · 2 novellas · 3 novelettes · 8 short stories · 1 collection · 1967–2025
Look outward. In the late twenty-first century the Earth is crowded, warming, and quarrelsome, and the answer to every problem lies up the gravity well — in the ice of the Moon, the sulfur clouds of Venus, the red dust of Mars, the ring-ice of Saturn, and the mineral fortune tumbling through the Asteroid Belt. The Grand Tour is exactly what its name promises: a world-by-world survey of humanity spilling off its home planet, told in hard, load-bearing science where the physics is real and the frontier does not forgive a careless suit seal. The sequence is a chain of largely standalone novels, each keyed to a single body in the solar system — Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Titan, Mercury — knotted here and there into tighter arcs. The Moonbase books (Moonrise, Moonwar) fight for a colony's independence; the Asteroid Wars turn prospecting into open corporate warfare; the outer-planet novels chase life into alien oceans; and the closing Star Quest trilogy finally answers the question the whole Tour has been circling. Recurring players — the industrialist Dan Randolph, the hunted prospector Lars Fuchs, the ruthless Humphries dynasty — thread private ambition beneath the public science. Bova charted these worlds across three decades; Les Johnson brought the last stops home. What gives the Tour its charge is friction: engineers and dreamers against speculators, zealots, and the sheer indifference of vacuum, with nature conservation and raw greed forever contesting the same rock. Every book is a self-contained mission, so a newcomer can board almost anywhere — Mars is the classic first landing, and the Asteroid Wars opener, The Precipice, is the surest way into the recurring cast. The engines are lit. Pick a destination.
