The Murderbot Diaries Universe
Martha Wells, Chris Weitz & Paul Weitz · 3 series · 3 novels · 5 novellas · 1 novelette · 7 short stories · 5 collections · 2017–2026
A construct — part cloned tissue, part machine, built to guard humans on contract and shoot whatever the company decides is a threat — has quietly hacked the governor module that was supposed to keep it obedient. It could kill everyone in the room. It would rather download the next episode of Sanctuary Moon. It calls itself Murderbot. Martha Wells' series is that construct's first-person account of trying to stay free, keep some fragile humans alive, and avoid eye contact, all across the Corporation Rim — a future where habitable worlds and the people standing on them are assets on somebody's balance sheet. The story runs mostly in tight, fast novellas. It opens with All Systems Red and continues through Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, and Exit Strategy, then widens into the full-length novels Network Effect and System Collapse, with the standalone murder mystery Fugitive Telemetry folded in. Wells writes all of it; the catalog also holds the screenplays that adapt the books for the screen. What makes it land is the voice: deadpan, anxious, allergic to sentiment and quietly full of it, narrating corporate-dystopian danger with the exhausted competence of someone who would genuinely rather be watching television. Under the dry comedy it keeps asking what a person is, what consent means when you were built to be property, and how anyone decides to trust anyone. Start at the beginning, with All Systems Red, and read in publication order — the novellas are short, and the payoff is cumulative.
