Birthright / Drop Trooper
Rick Partlow & Ralph Kern · 7 series · 38 novels · 2 novelettes · 1 short story · 2008–2024
Somebody has to ride the drop pod down through the fire, and it is never the people who started the war. This is military science fiction told from inside the armor — a future in which humanity's colonies grind against hostile space, and the powered-suit infantry are the ones who take the ground and hold it, one contested rock at a time. Its anchor is Rick Partlow's Drop Trooper, following Cameron Alvarez, a kid out of the underclass tunnels who enlists to escape a dead-end world and ends up fighting the alien Tahni in a Vigilante battlesuit — boot camp to hardened veteran, roughly one campaign per book. Around it the setting widens. Recon and Birthright carry the same long war and its aftermath, while The Acheron, Holy War, Psi Wars, and Pirate Wars — several from Partlow, others alongside co-author Ralph Kern — open new theaters, enemies, and eras across a shared future history. It is a sprawling, loosely braided body of work rather than one tight arc; the through-line is the trooper on the ground, not any single fleet or flag. The pleasure is grounded and kinetic: real ranks and real logistics, gallows humor in the barracks and raw terror in the assault, the grunt's-eye view instead of the admiral's. There is no single decreed order across the whole universe, so newcomers should start where it does its clearest work — Drop Trooper, book one, Contact Front — and follow Alvarez up through the ranks before ranging out into the wider wars.
