Bishop / Special Crimes Unit

Kay Hooper · 9 series · 23 novels · 2000–2021

Some killers leave nothing a crime lab can read — no print, no fiber, no chain of logic a rational agent can follow. For those files the Bureau keeps a unit it doesn't put in the brochure. Noah Bishop, an agent whose own mind runs a little too cold and a little too clear, recruits the people ordinary offices turn away: telepaths, mediums, clairvoyants, the ones who lay a hand on a wall and feel what happened against it. Together they are the Special Crimes Unit, and the things they hunt tend to hunt back. Kay Hooper builds it out in tight, self-contained trilogies, each a closed investigation that quietly widens a standing war. It opens with the Shadows books, then runs through Evil, Fear, Blood, Haven, and Dark, threading in the civilian Haven organization and the paranoid conspiracy strand of the Bishop Files before the late Salem novels bring the long arc home. Every case pairs a gifted investigator with a partner, and the romance burns as hot as the manhunt runs cold. The procedure is real — profiles, autopsies, task-force friction — but the second sight is realer, and neither is ever quite enough against what's waiting in the next small Southern town or snowbound cabin. Read them in the order they were written; begin with Stealing Shadows, and let Bishop's people, their losses, and the enemy they can never quite name accumulate across the whole.
