Some cities you find on a map. Newford you find by ear — a fiddle tune drifting up from a subway grate, a story a friend swears is true, the particular hush of an alley where the streetlight never quite reaches. Here the old powers never stayed in the old country. They followed the immigrants and the first peoples into a modern North American city of buskers, painters, runaways and night-shift dreamers, and learned to make do among us.
