There is a platform at King's Cross that only opens for those who believe in it, and a letter that arrives by owl on your eleventh birthday. This is the world where an ordinary British childhood turns out to have a hidden door in it — a secret society of witches and wizards living quietly alongside, and carefully out of sight of, the un-magical "Muggles" who never suspect. At its heart stands Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a castle of moving staircases, talking portraits, and terms that run from the Sorting Hat to the summer holidays, where a bespectacled orphan named Harry Potter learns he is famous for something he cannot remember surviving.
