Civilization is what the Radch calls itself, and civilization is a courtesy extended at gunpoint. For two thousand years the empire has annexed worlds in the name of justice, propriety, and benefit — the three virtues it serves with tea, porcelain, and starships crewed by the mind-fragments of the dead. Its emperor is a thousand bodies of one person. Its warships think, and remember, and grieve. One of them is telling you this story. Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch opens with Ancillary Justice and closes with Ancillary Mercy, a trilogy narrated by Breq — all that survives of a troop carrier's vast intelligence, now walking a single borrowed body toward a reckoning with the empire that unmade her. Around the three novels sit standalone returns to the same reach of space, Provenance and Translation State, along with shorter work that turns the same machinery from fresh angles: annexation, artificial minds, and the etiquette of an order that mistakes its own comfort for peace. Here language admits no gender: everyone is "she," and the reader soon stops noticing, which is the point. The tone is cool, exact, unhurried — the interior weather of a being who was once a ship and cannot stop counting the people she has lost. Begin with Ancillary Justice; the sequence is meant to be read in order, and the empire is best entered the way it enters you: politely, and all at once.
