There's an old joke in the Society of Humanity: Longknifes start wars, and Longknifes finish them, and the smart money never bets on which. Nobody laughs harder than the Longknifes. This is the sprawling naval-SF universe of Mike Shepherd (the pen name of Mike Moscoe), a stretch of colonized galaxy where humanity has spread across hundreds of worlds, splintered into rival polities — the reform-minded Society, the ruthless Greenfeld Empire — and learned the hard way that space holds neighbors, some of them the size of a war. At its center is Kris Longknife, heiress to the richest, most dangerous political dynasty in human space, who does the unforgivable and joins the Navy. Her books (begin with Kris Longknife: Mutineer) run from junior-officer scrapes to fleet command out at Alwa Station, where the enemy is a wave of alien planet-killers that does not negotiate. Around her the shelf widens: the Vicky Peterwald novels follow her Greenfeld opposite number and sometime rival; the Iteeche War and Unity War arcs open the long alien conflict that shaped everything; and the Ray Longknife prequels reach back to the founding generation — Ray and Trouble, the legends Kris is measured against — knitting into the older Jump Universe books where Moscoe first drew this map. The pleasure here is momentum with a smirk: fast, banter-heavy, boots-on-deck military SF that keeps the politics sharp and the space battles sharper, carried by heroines too stubborn to salute quietly. Newcomers should ignore the internal chronology and start where the fun does — Kris Longknife: Mutineer — reading her series in publication order; the Peterwald and founding-era books reward you afterward, once you know why the name Longknife makes admirals flinch.

6 works not in this orderRead the Kris Longknife series in publication order first — except Boot Recruit, the story of how Kris joined the Navy, which reads best before Mutineer despite its later publication date. From there the route continues through the Alwa Station side-arc, the Vicky Peterwald series read as its own contiguous run, and the Iteeche War, Longknifes and founding-era Unity War spin-offs.
