Andrzej Sapkowski · 1 series · 7 novels · 6 novellas · 7 novelettes · 2 collections · 1986–2024

Evil is evil, a witcher will tell you — lesser, greater, middling, the degree matters little. A witcher is a mutant bred and broken for one trade: killing the things that crawl out of the Slavic dark for coin, without love and without hate. Drowners in the marsh, strigas in the crypt, creatures with too many teeth. But Geralt of Rivia, white-haired and scarred and short on patience, keeps discovering that the fiends in the swamp are the honest work — the true horrors wear crowns, cast spells, or simply look away. This is the Continent: warring kingdoms, the black banners of Nilfgaard on the march, elves and dwarves hunted as vermin, and a destiny that chains a hired killer to a child he never meant to love. The whole of it is one author's hand — Andrzej Sapkowski — and one arc told in two keys. It opens in short stories that take old fairy tales and cut their throats: The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, where Geralt earns his ballads at a sharp price. Then the five-novel Witcher Saga proper — Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, The Lady of the Lake — trades the monster of the week for a continent at war and a hunt for one girl who matters more than thrones. Season of Storms stands off to one side, a later standalone set in Geralt's earlier years. What lingers is the mud, the blood, the gallows wit, sorceresses with genuine politics, and the bard Dandelion spinning butchery into legend. Begin where the storyteller did: The Last Wish, then Sword of Destiny, before the five saga novels in order.
