The World of Dezrel
David Dalglish & Robert J. Duperre · 6 series · 23 novels · 1 novella · 1 short story · 2010–2024
Two gods walk the continent of Dezrel, and they are brothers. Ashhur would set mankind free; Karak would order it, chain by chain — and between their rival faiths every kingdom, every guild, every family becomes a fault line waiting to break. This is dark fantasy in the older, bloodier key: a world where paladins bleed for their oaths, where necromancers love and betray, and where the sharpest theology is argued at the point of a blade. David Dalglish built Dezrel one self-published book at a time, and it grew into overlapping cycles rather than a single march. The Half-Orcs follows the brothers Harruq and Qurrah Tun through war, necromancy, and the long price of loyalty. Shadowdance turns to the knife-lit streets of Veldaren, where a boy raised to kill becomes Haern, the Watcher who hunts the thieves' guilds that made him — the strand later reworked from the earlier Watcher's Blade books. Paladins sets Jerico of Ashhur against Darius of Karak on a frontier where mercy and law collide. And The Breaking World, written with Robert J. Duperre, carries readers back to the founding, when the god-brothers first set foot on Dezrel and its ruin was already being written. Expect it brisk and brutal: short chapters, morally grey people, grief and violence given equal room, and a divine quarrel that never quite lets mortals rest. The cycles interlock through world and theology more than through one continuous plot, so no single path is mandated — but most newcomers enter through Shadowdance and its opener, A Dance of Cloaks, the sharpest-edged of the doors; those who would rather watch the world break in order begin at the beginning, with Dawn of Swords.

2 works not in this orderHalf-Orcs is the largest and original Dezrel series, but its Paladins introduce Jerico and Darius partway through and carry them directly into the Half-Orcs books that follow, so the two series are interleaved here rather than read separately. From there the route moves to Shadowdance — bridged by the standalone Blood of the Underworld — and closes with the Breaking World trilogy, which draws the whole setting together.
