Polity citizens now live for centuries thanks to advanced AI, yet many find their extended lives hollow and chase danger just to feel something again. Ex-soldier Ursula tries to build something more meaningful by founding a colony on the hostile world Threpsis, deliberately cut off from AI guidance, until deadly alien raptors force the colonists to adapt or die, and Ursula has to reckon with a past she'd rather have left behind.
