This is H. Beam Piper's original Fuzzy trilogy, opening with the Hugo Award-nominated Little Fuzzy (1962), about a prospector's discovery of a small, curious species on a frontier planet and the ensuing fight over whether they qualify as sentient beings. Piper followed it with a second novel, and a third, Fuzzies and Other People, did not appear until 1984, two decades after his death, closing out the trilogy he began with Little Fuzzy.
