The Edge Chronicles

Picture a world shaped like one vast jutting rock, ending in a cliff over an abyss with no measurable bottom — and everything that matters clinging to its lip. Out along the Edge the Deepwoods teem with creatures no bestiary has finished cataloguing: banderbears and gloamglozers, prowlgrins, hammelhorns, whole taxonomies of the invented. Sky-ships ride buoyant rock and floating wood between Undertown, a tangled river-mouth slum, and Sanctaphrax, a city of feuding scholars chained to the ground lest it drift off into open sky. This is the Edge, told by Paul Stewart in words and Chris Riddell in dense, cross-hatched ink — a fantasy that reads like an explorer's field notebook smuggled out of a place that cannot exist. The chronicle spans three Ages of Flight, carried through linked sagas of three books apiece. The Quint Saga opens the First Age of Flight; the Twig Saga and the Rook Saga steer the Second through storm, treachery and the drowning of a city; The Immortals bridges the long silence between; and the Cade Saga takes up the Third Age, when floating stone gives way to phrax-driven engines. Standalone tales and barkscroll miscellany thicken the map at its edges. The books appeared out of chronological order, which frees a newcomer to enter where the world first opened its door: Beyond the Deepwoods, the boy Twig's single step off the safe path into everything beyond it. Carry on in publication order from there — the Ages disclose their secrets best in the sequence they were drawn, each trilogy self-contained yet quietly rhyming with the last.
