It is the dawn of the third age, and the station turns in the dark between younger worlds and older powers. Babylon 5 is five miles of spinning metal hung over neutral space, the last of its name and its makers' final gamble: a port of call where Earth, the Minbari, the Centauri, the Narn, and a hundred lesser peoples might keep the peace by talking instead of burning. It works, more or less, until the things that walked the galaxy a million years ago wake and remember they were once served. The saga was conceived whole — a single arc with a beginning, a middle, and an end, unusual for the form — and on the page it lives as a companion line rather than a loose shared world. Three trilogies carry the sanctioned history: Greg Keyes charts the rise and reckoning of the telepath Psi Corps and its cold spymaster Bester; Jeanne Cavelos follows the vanishing order of the techno-mages through Casting Shadows, Summoning Light, and Invoking Darkness; Peter David's Legions of Fire tells the long night of Centauri Prime and Londo Mollari's ruin. Kathryn Drennan's To Dream in the City of Sorrows fills the gap between the early years. Alongside them stand the movie novelizations and the many volumes of Straczynski's own teleplays. This is space opera in the old, weighty sense — prophecy and diplomacy, the fall and rise of civilizations, the price a leader pays for the choices no one else will make. The books assume the story they orbit, so a newcomer meets it best through the series first, then reads each canonical trilogy in its own order; the Psi Corps books stand most cleanly on their own.
