Foreigner

A starship lost its way, and the colonists it stranded made an uneasy peace with the only world within reach — a world already owned. What distinguishes it is patience. There are no laser duels here to speak of, and the deadliest scenes are conversations: a badly chosen courtesy, a guest count that offends by being even, a silence that means the assassins' guild has already been informed. Cherryh renders alienness not as costume but as psychology you must learn as slowly as Bren does.
