Foreigner

C. J. Cherryh & Jane S. Fancher · 4 series · 22 novels · 3 short stories · 1994–2023

A starship lost its way, and the colonists it stranded made an uneasy peace with the only world within reach — a world already owned. The atevi are tall, black-skinned, golden-eyed, and courteous to a fault, and they do not love. What they feel instead is man'chi: an instinctive pull of loyalty upward through a lattice of associations, as involuntary as gravity and as easy to misread as it is fatal to misread. Between two species who share almost nothing stands one office: the paidhi, a single human translator licensed to speak, to parcel out technology word by careful word, and to keep a two-hundred-year truce from breaking over a misplaced pronoun. Bren Cameron holds that office. He is very good at it, which is precisely why he is never safe. The sequence runs to twenty-two novels published between 1994 and 2023, built as linked trilogies — each a self-contained arc of crisis, exile, and negotiated return, opening with Foreigner, Invader, and Inheritor. C. J. Cherryh writes the later volumes with Jane S. Fancher; the catalog gathers the core novels alongside the three story-sequences that carve the long line into readable stages. What distinguishes it is patience. There are no laser duels here to speak of, and the deadliest scenes are conversations: a badly chosen courtesy, a guest count that offends by being even, a silence that means the assassins' guild has already been informed. Cherryh renders alienness not as costume but as psychology you must learn as slowly as Bren does. Begin at the beginning — Foreigner, 1994 — and read in publication order; the trilogy arcs are the map, and each threshold rewards the ground already crossed.
