Judge Dredd

Mega-City One. Hundreds of millions of citizens stacked in mile-high blocks along the poisoned eastern seaboard, where boredom is a capital offense and crime is the only growth industry. There is no jury here, no appeal, no waiting on a trial — only the Law, and the Judges who carry it: badge, sidearm, and the authority to convict and execute on the spot. Chief among them walks Dredd, helmet never lifted, sentence never softened, the perfect instrument of a city that fears its own people. This is the prose of 2000 AD's longest-running strip, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. The novels reach Mega-City One through several eras of publisher and pen. A 1990s Virgin line and Black Library's early-2000s run (shaped by editor David Bishop) first opened the streets to prose; the current Rebellion/Abaddon books, largely steered by Michael Carroll, map the timeline end to end. Carroll's Year One, Year Two and Year Three follow Dredd's rookie career; the Judges sequence rewinds to the near-future collapse that birthed the Judge system; Rico Dredd: The Titan Years tracks his fallen clone-brother in the penal colonies; The Fall of Deadworld crosses into the dimension that spawns the undead Judge Death. Psi-Judge Cassandra Anderson — mind-reader, wisecracker, the humanity Dredd refuses — carries her own strands. Dave Stone, Matthew Smith and James Swallow are among the many hands. What keeps it sharp is the satire under the sirens: a hero who is also the joke, a law-and-order fantasy that quietly indicts the authoritarianism it stages, delivered in black comedy and blunt-force action. Start with Carroll's Judge Dredd: Year One — built as a jumping-on point, it puts a young Dredd on the street with no comics homework required. From there the world opens every direction: forward into his career, sideways to Anderson's beat, back into the Judges' grim origin.
