Crippled in orbit around a planet that turns out to be alive, the Enterprise is meant to be ferrying a fragile peace mission to the Orion Arm — until an alien presence starts working on the crew's nerves, nudging pacifism toward open mutiny. Kirk's fight to hold onto command becomes literal: having talked his way out of wars for years, he now has to retake his own bridge from a crew turned against him by something they can't see.
