Somewhere in a mountain vault a ring of alien stone stands waiting, and when its inner track spins and locks the chevrons alight, it tears open a bridge to a world a galaxy away. Step through. On the far side is a franchise built on that single, irresistible idea: that the gods of old were travellers, that the road between stars is a doorway you can dial, and that the people sent to walk it are a wisecracking, mismatched team who would die for one another. What began as a feature film widened into decades of television and then into shelves of original prose that carry the mission onward. The books are a licensed line of standalone adventures set inside the shows' continuity, gathered under banners for each command. The SG-1 novels send Earth's flagship team gate-hopping against parasitic false gods; the Atlantis novels strand an expedition in a lost city under siege in another galaxy; Travelers' Tales collects shorter runs, and a film novelization marks where it all began. Sally Malcolm anchored the early wave; Jo Graham, Melissa Scott, Amy Griswold and Sabine C. Bauer drove the ambitious "Legacy" continuation that plays out like an unfilmed season. Fan works and the later Universe strand thicken the map further. The register is exploration with the safety off but the heart on: banter under fire, wonder at every threshold, ancient mythology reskinned as galactic history. Most novels stand alone, so publication order serves any newcomer picking a favourite team. The one exception rewards order: read the Atlantis "Legacy" books in sequence, opening with Homecoming, because they tell one long story straight through. Dial in wherever your team is, and go.
