CoDominium

The treaty is a lie everyone has agreed to keep. Having run out of ways to win, the United States and the Soviet Union instead divide the sky between them — the CoDominium, a joint hegemony that rules Earth and its colony worlds not out of hope but to postpone the war that will end everything. This is a future history written in the cold engineer's key: politics is the art of buying time, order is expensive, and someone always pays for it in blood, on a world no one back home could find on a map. The body of work runs along a few hard threads rather than one line. Falkenberg's Legion follows Colonel John Christian Falkenberg, a mercenary who keeps the peace the CoDominium can no longer afford to keep itself — the military spine, gathered as The Prince (with S. M. Stirling). War World is a shared-world project set on the brutal frontier planet Haven, its anthologies written by many hands — John F. Carr, Don Hawthorne, and others — under Pournelle's charter. Standalone novels such as Birth of Fire and Exiles to Glory walk the colonies' raw early years. And far downstream, after the CoDominium collapses and the Empires of Man rise from its wreckage, first contact arrives in The Mote in God's Eye and its sequels, written with Larry Niven. The register is realpolitik carried to the stars: no easy villains, competence as the highest virtue, a steady conviction that civilization is a thin membrane held taut by unglamorous people doing ugly, necessary work. Two clean doors stand open to a newcomer. The Mote in God's Eye reads alone — a rigorous, deeply unsettling alien encounter that asks no prior reading. For the future history's backbone, begin with the Falkenberg sequence in The Prince. Publication order serves you fine from there.

Falkenberg's Legion is the most substantial and best-known thread of Jerry Pournelle's CoDominium future history and the place to start, read in the order of Falkenberg's career rather than of publication. The Laurie Jo Hansen stories are a separate, earlier-set thread; the Moties books, with A Spaceship for the King, are the far-future Empire of Man that grew out of the CoDominium. The War World shared-world anthologies are a further branch, best read through their own series.
