Hit World

Somewhere a form gets stamped, a fee clears, and a name slides out of the living column into the other one. In Hit World, murder isn't a crime — it's a trade. The setting takes our own streets and files off one serial number: contract killing is legal here, licensed and taxed and hedged with rules, and the men and women who do it clock in like anybody else. Only their product is a corpse, and their craft is patience. Built at Chris Kennedy Publishing as an open-door world, Hit World is written by many hands — William Alan Webb, Marisa Wolf, Larry Hoy, Matt Novotny, John E. Siers among them — each staking out a corner of the same regulated underworld. The books fan into standalone jobs and running lines: The Valkyries Initiative and Valkyries follow the women of the trade; Web of Shadows and Kisses and Chaos work other angles of the same city, and the collections gather the shorter contracts. No single spine runs through it. The pieces share a rulebook, not a hero. What lingers is the paperwork behind the trigger — a profession with ethics, guilds, rivalries and grudges, staffed by operators who are neither monsters nor heroes but working stiffs in a very particular line. The tone runs hardboiled and quick, nearer the action-thriller shelf than the whodunit. There's no mandated order, so pick a hitter whose beat sounds like yours — the Valkyries books are as clean a way in as any — and start where the first job opens.
