This one has a curfew, a chemistry midterm, and a mother who thinks she's just acting out. Meet Buffy Summers, cheerleader turned monster-killer, and Sunnydale, the sunny California town that happens to sit on a Hellmouth, a mystical hot spot that coughs up a fresh apocalypse roughly every semester. Born on television and carried onward by a long shelf of tie-in novels, the world runs on wit, stakes (both kinds), and a circle of friends who refuse to stay home: the Scooby Gang. The books slot mostly against the show's seasons, monster-of-the-week adventures from series regulars like Christopher Golden, Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, and Jeff Mariotte. Around the standalones sit self-contained arcs, the demon-summoning Gatekeeper Trilogy, the branching apocalypse of The Lost Slayer, the dark what-if of Wicked Willow, plus the Tales of the Slayer anthologies, which follow the Chosen Ones of centuries past, and a companion line for the brooding, souled vampire Angel and his detective agency down in Los Angeles. Expect banter riding shotgun with genuine dread: the high-school metaphor is literal here (the substitute really is a giant insect), then sharpened into grief, loyalty, and the ordinary terror of growing up. Newcomers can drop in almost anywhere. Tales of the Slayer needs no homework, the Gatekeeper Trilogy is a complete story on its own, and Kiersten White's newer Slayer duology hands the calling to a brand-new heroine after the original show has closed. Otherwise follow publication order and let the Hellmouth do the rest.
