Around the novels grew a true shared world — the Friends of Darkover and Free Amazons anthologies, dozens of hands writing in the Domains; the Clingfire Trilogy and the Legends of Darkover collections; and, since Bradley's death, the continuation carried on by Deborah J. Ross. What sets Darkover apart is the price it sets on power. The Compact forbids any weapon that kills beyond a blade's reach, so a man must stand in danger of the death he deals; laran binds minds in intimacy and in agony; and the Renunciates, the Free Amazons who swear off clan and husband, press against a society that would spend women like coin. Bradley asked readers to come in the order she wrote, not by internal calendar — and that remains the surest path.
