World of Darkness

It is your city — the same wet streets, the same glass towers, the same late train home. Only here the towers were financed by things that stopped being human centuries ago, the cults are real, and the predators wearing your neighbor's face keep to a nightly etiquette older than the nation. This is the World of Darkness: our world one shade blacker, a gothic-punk mirror where the monsters of folklore are neither slain nor imagined but organized — into clans, tribes, pyramids of secret power — and where you are invited to see the long dark from behind their eyes. The setting comes in two ages. The classic World of Darkness was built line by line through the 1990s: Vampire: The Masquerade first, then Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, and their medieval Dark Ages, each a self-contained mythology sharing one damned night. In 2004 it was reflected anew as Vampire: The Requiem. The fiction runs just as wide — most famously the thirteen Clan Novels, one book per vampire bloodline, thirteen threads braided into a single war for a burning city, alongside the werewolves' Tribe Novels and the Dark Ages saga. It is the work of many hands over decades — Stewart Wieck, Gherbod Fleming, Eric Griffin, Richard Lee Byers, Bill Bridges among them — so treat it as a shelf of interlocking horror, not one long story. What sets it apart is intimacy: this is personal horror, the slow accounting of what power costs the soul, not gore for its own sake. Newcomers should start with Clan Novel: Toreador, the first thread of the thirteen-book saga, and follow the clans from there.
