Under the great red sun the Darkovans call the Bloody Sun, four moons cross a sky no Terran star-chart names, and a world remembers what Earth has forgotten it ever lost. Here a colony ship went down in the long ago; here its children forgot the stars and grew into something stranger — a feudal folk of the Seven Domains whose lords, the Comyn, carry laran, the inborn telepathic gift, and wield it through matrix crystals that turn thought into power. Call it science and you are right; call it sorcery and you are not wrong. When the Terran Empire rediscovers this cold world, two truths meet at the spaceport wall and neither will bend. Marion Zimmer Bradley built Darkover across four decades and better than two dozen novels, each written to stand on its own yet all fitted to one long history: the fire-haunted Ages of Chaos, the Hundred Kingdoms and the forging of the Compact, the Recontact when the star-ships return, and the slow years After the Comyn. Around the novels grew a true shared world — the Friends of Darkover and Free Amazons anthologies, dozens of hands writing in the Domains; the Clingfire Trilogy and the Legends of Darkover collections; and, since Bradley's death, the continuation carried on by Deborah J. Ross. What sets Darkover apart is the price it sets on power. The Compact forbids any weapon that kills beyond a blade's reach, so a man must stand in danger of the death he deals; laran binds minds in intimacy and in agony; and the Renunciates, the Free Amazons who swear off clan and husband, press against a society that would spend women like coin. Bradley asked readers to come in the order she wrote, not by internal calendar — and that remains the surest path. A newcomer can safely open the door at The Heritage of Hastur, the heart of the Sharra arc, or walk the deep past first through Stormqueen!; either shows the world at full strength.

553 works not in this orderPublication order, which Bradley herself recommended over internal chronology because each Darkover novel was written to stand alone. The Sword of Aldones is the exception: Bradley rewrote it decades later as Sharra's Exile and preferred the rewrite, so the route opens on The Bloody Sun instead and places the original beside its replacement rather than at the head.
