Serenityverse
James Lovegrove, Una McCormack, Ben Edlund, Brett Matthews, Jane Espenson, Jose Molina, Joss Whedon, Keith R. A. DeCandido, M. K. England, Rosiee Thor & Tim Lebbon · 2 series · 10 novels · 4 short stories · 1 anthology · 2005–2024
Half a galaxy terraformed, the war lost, and a Firefly-class transport called Serenity staying just far enough ahead of the Alliance to take the next job — legal if possible, which it generally is not. Mal Reynolds lost a war he still believes in. Zoe stayed with him. Wash flies, Kaylee keeps an engine running on faith and strawberries, and Jayne would sell any of them for the right price and then somehow not. There is a preacher with a past, and a doctor who broke his sister out of a government facility that had been opening her head. Firefly ran for fourteen episodes and a film, and the books carry it on. The original novels — Big Damn Hero, The Magnificent Nine, Generations, The Ghost Machine, Carnival, Life Signs, What Makes Us Mighty and the rest — sit between the episodes, alongside the earlier tie-in stories and the Still Flying collection. The register is space western with the accents right: swearing in Mandarin, cattle in the cargo bay, frontier towns with one doctor between them, and a crew whose loyalty is never once stated and never in doubt. If you know the show, start with Big Damn Hero and read the novels in publication order. If you do not, watch it first — these books are written for people who already miss it.
