Humanity's colonies are burning. A theocratic alliance of alien species called the Covenant has declared the extinction of mankind an act of worship, and between their war fleets and the last defenders of Earth stand a handful of armored soldiers engineered, from childhood, to be better than human. This is the Halo universe: a war story set in the twenty-sixth century and wrapped around a far older mystery — the ring-shaped megastructures, scattered across the galaxy by a vanished civilization, that give the setting its name and hold a secret worse than any invasion. The shelf grows out of a 2001 video game, but it reads as its own body of military science fiction, built by many hands. Eric Nylund opened the line and set its spine — the origin of the Spartan supersoldier program and its most famous product, the near-silent warrior known only as the Master Chief. Greg Bear's Forerunner Saga (Cryptum, Primordium, Silentium) winds the clock back a hundred thousand years to the god-engineers who built the rings, and to the parasite that forced them to fire. Karen Traviss's Kilo-Five Trilogy trades open war for the poisoned quiet that follows it; Troy Denning and Kelly Gay carry the front line forward across the ongoing novels; Battle Born aims the same universe at younger readers, and the anthologies gather the shorter fiction. What holds it together is a particular register: the close heat of soldiers who bleed set against the vertigo of deep time and dead gods, held in one hand. It asks what it costs to manufacture a hero, and whether the weapons that win a war can be trusted with the peace after. Newcomers start with The Fall of Reach — it is where the line began and where the Chief is made, and it leads cleanly into publication order from there.
